Locksmith FAQs
Iv'e just moved house - should I change the locks?
Yes, and we strongly recommend doing it on moving day if possible. You have no way of knowing how many copies of the old keys exist or who holds them; previous owners, estate agents, tradespeople, and former tenants may all have had access. Changing the cylinder on your door locks is a quick, affordable job that takes around 20 minutes per door and provides immediate peace of mind. We can arrange to attend on the day you move in, and we will advise on whether a like-for-like cylinder replacement is sufficient or whether upgrading to anti-snap cylinders would improve your security.
Will a locksmith break my lock to get me in?
In most cases, no. With over 10 years of experience, our locksmiths use specialist tools to open standard locks without causing any damage, and without needing to replace them. For higher-security locks such as 5-lever mortice deadlocks, drilling may occasionally be necessary to gain entry, but this is a last resort and still less costly than breaking a window. We always aim to preserve your existing lock wherever possible, and will advise you honestly before any work begins.
How long will it take a locksmith to gain entry?
For most standard cylinder and night latch locks, we can typically gain entry in 10–20 minutes. uPVC multi-point mechanisms that have dropped or failed internally can take a little longer, usually 20–40 minutes, as they sometimes require the door to be manipulated before the mechanism resets. High-security 5-lever mortice deadlocks may take longer still. We always work quickly and carefully to minimise any inconvenience, and will give you an honest estimate of time before we begin.
What is lock snapping and how can I protect my home?
Lock snapping is a burglary technique that exploits a weakness in standard Euro cylinder locks, the type found in most uPVC, composite, and aluminium doors. A burglar can snap the cylinder in 5–10 seconds using nothing more than a screwdriver, disabling all locking points at once. It requires no skill and is widely demonstrated online. The solution is to replace your existing cylinder with an anti-snap, anti-pick, anti-drill cylinder that meets the TS007 3-star standard. These are specifically designed to break at a sacrificial point before the working part of the cylinder is reached. We supply and fit anti-snap cylinders across the West Midlands

What locks does my home insurance require?
Most home insurance policies require exterior doors to have one of the following: a five-lever mortice deadlock (BS 3621), a key-operated multi-point locking system, or a night latch used alongside one of the other two. The five-lever mortice is the minimum standard; the more levers, the more secure. Multi-point systems lock the door into the frame at three or more points simultaneously and are the most secure option for uPVC and composite doors. Night latches alone are usually not accepted as the only lock. All locks we supply and fit carry the British Standard mark, meaning they have been independently tested for resistance to drilling, picking, and forcing. We will always confirm insurance compliance before recommending a lock.
Contact Dial A Locksmith Midlands to check whether your existing locks meet your insurer’s requirements.
Can a locksmith replace window locks and door handles?
Yes. We replace and repair locks on all uPVC and wooden windows, and carry a stock of door and window handles in most standard sizes, shapes, and colours for both uPVC and timber frames. The majority of handle replacements and window lock repairs can be completed in a single visit. Whether the issue is a break-in, wear and tear, or a handle that has failed, we will assess on arrival and quote before any work begins. All replacement parts meet current British Standards.
For more info on handle replacements for both doors and windows, get in touch.
What should I do if my home has been broken into?
Your priority is safety. Do not enter the property until you know it is safe to do so. Call 999 if the intruder may still be on the premises, or 101 to report the burglary to West Midlands Police. Try not to disturb the scene before the police attend, as this may affect evidence collection. Once the police have attended, our Burglary Repairs team can secure the property and repair or replace any damaged locks.
How much does a locksmith cost, and how do I pay?
Locksmith costs vary depending on the job. A standard lockout or cylinder replacement typically costs less than more complex work, such as a multi-point mechanism repair or burglary securing. We provide a free estimated quote before attending wherever possible, and our pricing is fully transparent with no hidden call-out fees. Payment is by cash or credit/debit card on completion of the work. Every job is backed by our 12-month parts and labour guarantee.
